Long Weekend | Atlanta | Part 2

My trip to Atlanta was one for the books. My airport travels went very well and I packed perfectly (click here for Part 1 of the blog). When I arrived at the airport, I boarded the MARTA train and headed straight for the Arts Center stop. My original plan was to go to the Museum of Design, but it wasn't open. Instead, I went to the High Museum of Art. Only three of their exhibits were open –about half of the museum – so I explored for awhile and enjoyed what was available. Then I sat outside on the museum patio and journaled for awhile about my trip thus far. Small tangent – I absolutely love listening to older people's stories. Someone once told me about how they had found their mother's old travel journal and read it. It was about one of their family vacations. She had written down EVERYTHING - where they ate, drove, slept, and adventured. This inspired me to do the same. I now keep a travel journal and write down every little detail in the hopes that someday someone will rediscover and read about my adventures.

Now, back to my trip. I walked around downtown where my friend, Brittany, picked me up. We then parked , stowed away my bag, and ate at the Joy Café. There I ate the best grilled cheese/tomato soup combo I've ever had. It was either that good or I was starving. Next, we trekked across the entire downtown to a nitrogen ice cream place called Subzero. I'm not going to lie to you, I think that was probably the worst ice cream I've ever had. To be fair, I did have vegan because I'm allergic to milk products. Next, we were on to the Ponce City Market - an Atlanta favorite. Almost every store had a thriving plant section where we slowly perused, bought too many things at Posman Books, ate delicious mexican food, and ate straight cookie dough. Batter Cookie Dough had the best vegan sugar cookie dough. It didn't even taste milk-less! True love was found at Ponce City Market.

On the first day I walked around 6.5 miles. This was rough for a Louisiana girl mostly because of all the hills. I was out of breath the entire time. This trend continued into day 2 when we hiked all the way up Stone Mountain. Stone Mountain is beautiful and around 1,600 ft tall. I've posted some entertaining videos during my trek. I had to take many breaks and can honestly say that I'm glad I did it. However, I don't think I ever want to again. We took our sweet time with a couple of water breaks while some ran past us. The view at the top was so beautiful and satisfying and the walk down was much better. Overall, I think it was a little over a 2 mile walk. We treated ourselves to some delicious BBQ & ice cream afterwards.

Brittany actually lives right outside of Atlanta in a town called Covington. Any Vampire Diaries fans reading this will know that's where its filmed. We actually ate at the Mystic and walked around the main square before heading into the city to watch some bad karaoke. Day 3 was the most relaxing day. We actually slept in before heading over to their family's house for Mother's Day. This is where I learned of true Georgia southern hospitality. There wasn't an empty plate or glass to be found and hugs to go around.

Day 4 (Monday) was my favorite and least favorite day all at once. We started off the day by going to the World of Coca-Cola. To be quite honest, I did not expect it to be anything extraordinary. It ended up being much better than I ever could've imagined. I designed my own coke bottle, went into their 4D theatre, and tried all the coke products my allergies would allow. After grabbing a quick lunch at Johnny Rockets, Brittany brought me to the airport. We both had the best time but were so sad for it to be over.

It had been around 8 months since I last saw Brittany, and it was as if no time had past. I am blessed to have found such an amazing friend. I cannot wait to go back and visit.

Until next time, cheers!

Gabby
